Google's Android Wear platform for Wearables, which was showcased at the company's I/O Developers Conference earlier in the year, has been the cynosure of all eyes since its launch.

Major technology players such as Samsung, LG, HTC, and Google itself have all caught up with the 'Wearables' trend and are engrossed in developing/releasing Smartwatch-like Wearables running Android Wear.

Jerry Shin, CEO of Asustek, mentioned at a conference for investors that the company is more or less likely to launch its first Wearable in the IFA conference. He also said that the Taiwan-based company's smartwatch-like Wearable was well-received by Google, which has a tie-up with Asus under its Android Wear initiative.

"We're dreaming big about the future of wearable devices, but the dream will not come true this year or in the first half of next year because the market demand has not picked up," Shen said at the investors' conference.
the gadget will incorporate an AMOLED display, and the smartwatch is likely to pack in 'gesture and voice control' functionality as Jonney Shin, chairman of Asus, had hinted early this year. The chairman had said that his company was looking at launching wearable devices featuring 'movement controls'.

Asus ZenFone gets good reception in India

Asus has made further inroads into the Indian market, selling 40,000 handsets of its latest ZenFone in the four days since the smartphone went on sale in the country, thanks to the appeal of its high performance/price ratio.

Xiaomi is slated to roll out its Mi 3 model in the market soon and HTC aims to boost its share of the market to 15% in two years.

Peter Chang, regional head of South Asia and managing director for Asus India, said that the company aims to muscle into the top-five for smartphones, notebook PCs and tablet PCs in the Indian market next year.

Asus is pushing its products in India through both physical and virtual channels, at a ratio of 6:4, the latter via a colaboration with Flipkart, India's largest e-commerce site.

Flipkart statistics put ZenFone sales at 40,000 units in the first four days after its rollout, ranking sixth place on the market in July.

Xiaomi has also set up a firm foothold in India, the world third-largest smartphone market, and the company is ready to kick off sales of the Mi 3 there soon, at an expected retail-price tag of 13,999 rupees (US$233). Xiaomi is also selling its products via Flipkart.

HTC debuted its high-end model the E8 and medium-end model the Desire 616 in India in the first half of July, eliciting a positive reception from Indian consumers, who favor the appearances of the firm's products, according to Chang Chia-lin, president for global sales and chief financial officer. The company garnered 4% in the high-end sector of the market in the first quarter by selling mainly models priced over 20,000 rupees (US$331), double the average price tag of 10,000 rupees (US$165) or lower for the low-end sector.

With functional models priced at 10,000 rupees or lower still boasting 70%-80% of India's mobile-phone market, demand for smartphones is surging, scoring 175% growth last year. The substantial demand has attracted the participation of all major brands worldwide. By comparison, with its penetration rate already hitting 66%, China's smartphone market has become increasingly saturated.

For the moment, the capacity of India's smartphone market is still rather limited, due to low per capita income, but the potential is large, as Indians favor renowned brands. Apple and Samsung now dominate the high-end sector of the local mobile-phone market, which now accounts for 6%-7% of the entire market.

Asustek turns sights to online smartphone sales in Southeast Asia

Taipei, June 29 (CNA) Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. is scheduled to open its official online store in Singapore on July 7 as the company's first step in expanding its online sales network of the low-cost ZenFone smartphone into Southeast Asian markets.

Further, the PC vendor will open its e-commerce website in Hong Kong in late August or early September, said Michael Huang, general manager of the Taiwan branch of Singapore-based e-commerce group Uitox Corp., which teamed up with Asustek in April this year to sell ZenFone models online in Taiwan.

By the end of this year, Asustek plans to launch its official online smartphone sales service with Uitox in more Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, Huang told reporters last week when he attended an e-commerce forum in Taipei organized by Facebook Inc.

Asustek officials admit to being surprised by the better-than-expected results of its online smartphone sales, which accounted for more than 30 percent of Asustek's total smartphone sales volume in Taiwan in April, Huang said.

The Taiwanese computer maker is targeting a higher ratio of online smartphone sales in July for its home market, and has determined to make inroads into the fast-growing e-commerce market in Southeast Asia, in partnership with Uitox, he added.

The ZenFone models, priced as low as US$99, were unveiled in January this year as Asustek's answer to Chinese handset maker Xiaomi Corp.'s affordable Hongmi series

The ZenFone series has hit retailers' store shelves in Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, and is scheduled to go on sale in India, Russia and Brazil in late second quarter, according to Asustek.

Asustek CEO Jerry Shen told a media briefing on June 2 at the Computex Taipei computer trade show that the company was working with its suppliers to double ZenFone shipments from 500,000 in May to one million units in June, and it will maintain that level until at least the fourth quarter of 2014.

Asustek forecast at an investor conference on May 7 that it would sell 5 million to 10 million smartphones this year to boost its 2014 revenues.
